This week's elections resulted in two new Republican governors in states known for strong Democrat support seen as recently as one year ago when Obama swept New Jersey and Virginia. There was also a strong showing by an amateur newbie, Doug Hoffman of New York's 23rd district, who ran on the Conservative ticket and was summarily dismissed by the pseudo-Republican who bowed out. The crisp fall air today is permeated by the impatience of voters in other states who now are counting down to the spring primaries and next year's general election, ready to make their voices heard at the ballot box. Their message is clear: keep overspending, overtaxing, and treating us like mentally-challenged cattle, and we will be glad to add you to the ranks of the unemployed.
So now I have a few questions: Do the far-left leaning and wimpy, moderate members of Congress get what happened yet? Do they understand the gravity of their peril? If they do, they have two choices. One is to straighten up and fly right, pardon the pun, a.k.a. "I need to save my own hide" mode. Perhaps they would review the pending legislation before them with a more serious consideration to the opinions of their constituents. Perhaps they would challenge the members of their own parties to consider the Constitution, especially the article that ISN'T there saying "All citizens shall have free (fill in the blank)." Perhaps they will connect with the communities who elect them instead of the special interest groups.
Their second choice is to view this as a rally call for crazy time. They see the hourglass has been turned over, and each day is another grain of sand slipping through until the bell tolls and their hour of power is gone. So they will feverishly rush through legislation to please their backers, to hell with what their constituents think. Perhaps they will pursue every angle at the whim of their special interest pals. If the voters are going to vote them out anyway, why not ram every far-reaching, socialist, deficit-growing program they've ever thought of through right now before they're shown the door?
So Senator, Congressman, what is your choice? Will you choose to exhibit some character, take us seriously, and try to repair this severely frayed relationship with your constituents? Or will you play lame duck and let your bitterness and contempt for the "useful idiots" come through? You get to decide now. We get to decide next November. It's not that far away, and even mentally-challenged cattle have memories.
What's The Next Move for Congress?
